Welcome to South Co Laois: the crossroads of Ireland - a gem set in the heart of the Midlands. This part of Ireland provides very good angling and interesting places to visit. Whether fishing our lakes or rivers one can only be impressed with the quality of the water and the rewarding variety and quantity of fish. Much work has been done to develop fisheries and facilities for anglers so that a visit to the area will prove relaxing and enjoyable.

Rivers
The river Nore, is a noted dry fly fishery with good trout, salmon and pike stocks, it flows through South Laois and provides great trout fishing. The Erkina river, a tributary of the Nore, flows through the area is also a noted trout river. Specimen pike are frequently caught on the stretch between Rathdowney and Durrow.

Other noted rivers in the area are: Delour river and Whitehorse river near Mountrath and the Goul flowing form Cullohill and joining the Nore near Durrow, which is not a large river but is a great spawning river for trout and salmon.

Coarse Fishing
The Coarse angler will enjoy a visit to the area as numerous small lakes hidden away in woods and forests are relatively unfished. Ballyfin Lake near Mountrath, set in the grounds of the Patrician Brothers, contains pike, tench and rudd. Templemore Lake is situated in the town park and is a popular attraction for anglers as it contains excellent stocks of pike, tench and rudd. Ballaghmore Lake near Roscrea has excellent carp, rudd, perch, pike and eel. Ballinakill Lakes, Mass Lough and Gills Pond are small lakes with superb angling in a lovely setting. Here you have pike, rudd and good tench angling.

Granston Lake
Granstown Lake near Clough, Ballacolla, is recognised as a prime coarse fishing lake by local, national and international anglers. It is surrounded by Grantstown Forest which is a national nature and wildlife reserve, containing an abundance of animals, birds and a wide variety of trees and plants. This 24 acre lake contains large quantities of coarse fish such as pike, perch, rudd, tench and eel.

The fishery is managed by Granstown Lake Development Company Limited who have erected 10 double jetties (20) including a stand for disabled anglers and have provided an access road and car park. It is advisable to book in advance, as pegs are limited to 20 per day.

Permits
Practically all of the fisheries in Co Laois are managed by angling associations, local development groups and others interested in promoting tourism in the county. Angling permits are available locally. A state licence is required for salmon fishing.
